Founded in 1756, Austrias Riedel Crystal is the worlds premier manufacturer of wine glasses. The Vinum Extreme series of glasses are machine-made of diamond-shaped 24 percent lead crystal. These glass shapes, with a unique angular look, dramatic oversized bowls, and extra-tall stems, were introduced in 1986 to support the increasingly dense consistency of wines. The design provides an exceptionally wide evaporation surface, thereby intensifying a wines bouquet and silky texture. The glasses in this set of four were specifically shaped to highlight the fruit in full-bodied red wines with high acidity and moderate tannin, such as Barbaresco, Barolo, Beaujolais Grand Cru, Red Burgundy, Gamay, Nebbiolo, and Pinot Noir. The mouth of the Pinot Noir glasses draws wine to the areas of the tongue that perceive sweetness, highlighting the fruit and mellowing the acidity.
