A pasta insert does a job similar to that of a colander, but can be much more convenient when cooking for a large crowd. Fill the stockpot with just slightly less water than usual, and drop in the insert. When the waters boiling, add pasta or veggies and boil regularly. Just as al dente is achieved, pull the entire insert from the pot, pasta and all. The water drains out easily, with no need to lug a full and heavy stockpot over to the sink for draining. Depending on the food, you can often reuse the water--a nice Ženvironmental bonus. (Some say that water used for cooking vegetables makes great plant fertilizer.) Its dishwasher-safe, but you may find it a bit large for many standard washers, so keep a scrubber handy.
